PBIS - Positive Behavior Intervention System |

| Pierce school has adopted PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) as our positive behavior expectation plan. We had our first roll out, or introduction for expected behavior during an all school assembly on the first day of school. We are focusing on school dismissal. Students were shown the way it should NOT look, followed by a discussion on what went wrong. They were then shown what an organized, orderly, and calm dismissal should look like. After practicing the routine back in their classrooms, many students have earned behavior ribbons for modeling our school rules of “ Be Kind, Be Safe, and Do The Right Thing” during dismissal. |

January & February 2008
During the months of January and February, our roll out for PBIS has focused on the lunch room. The Golden Spoon Café was established to recognize students who are doing the “right thing” during lunch time. So far the Conval Cougar mascot and the Great Brook Cheerleaders have visited the Café at Pierce School in recognition of the students who have gotten their golden place setting. We thank both the Cougar mascot and the Great Brook Cheerleaders for their contribution to the Golden Café! PBIS Update - April 2007 We are continuing our “STOP, LOOK & LISTEN” Roll Out. Students have done an great job learning the sign but we feel more work needs to be done. The team has decided that this is the last Roll Out for the school year. We continue to revise to make each Roll Out work more efficiently for staff and students. One new change is that each student is required to sign the referral slip they have gotten after a conference with the staff member who wrote the referral. We hope this will eliminate any confusion with the student as to why they received a referral slip. If you have any comments or questions about the PBIS program please let us know so we can help. We as a staff are still learning and reviewing as we go as to what works and what doesn’t. Third PBIS Roll Out Our next PBIS Roll Out will be Stop, Look, and Listen. We are focusing on teaching students to respond in a positive, and universal manner when they hear the words Stop, Look, and Listen followed by the visual cue of the “quiet coyote”. These cues will be used any time a direction is about to be given and full attention of the class is needed. All students are expected to freeze and give their complete attention to the teacher when they hear the cue, and see the signal. As all teachers are using the same words and signal, any time the students encounter it they will know what to do, regardless of which teacher is issuing the direction. Smile stamps or green cards will be given to students who immediately comply, and ribbons are awarded when students accumulate 3 stamps/cards. During this Roll Out the ribbon store will be offering Caldecott books for students to purchase when they have earned 5 ribbons. Second PBIS Roll Out In November we held our second PBIS Roll Out. We are focusing on disrespect within our school community and ways to turn SLAMS into SMILES. With the help of Ms. Gregg, our school Guidance Counselor, the students have been shown that SLAMS can be Silent, Language oriented, Actions, Mimicry, and Social. Each class has learned to recognize what a SLAM is and how to turn it into a SMILE. Students Making Inspiring Leaps Emerge Successful and can help change a disrespectful situation around so that it has a positive outcome. Ribbons are being earned for being kind and doing the right thing to turn around a negative action as well as random acts of kindness. PBIS Update Remember to ask your child/children why they are earning ribbons. We have focused on SLAMS to SMILES in three main areas: Give Compliments Offer to Help Use Your Manners The students have been earning many ribbons to spend at the store by being kind and helpful. Not only do they get ribbons from the staff at the school but also the bus drivers, lunch ladies and the crossing guard. Link to the ConVal Website for more information: PBIS |
