Studio Sketches December 2007

"Dinner at Aunt Connie's House" is one of my favorite children's books. In the story Faith Ringgold, a fabric artist, paints pictures of famous Black women throughout American history. The story celebrates family and friends with a large dinner party. We studied the pictures and created our own room interiors and table settings. Children reflected on our Thanksgiving celebrations or planned for the Holiday season and into the New Year. Tempera paint was then applied. A dark outline in the artist's style followed. We have amazing results. Students paid particular attention to the details on walls, tables and floors. Proir to the Thanksgiving break we looked at books with Native American designs throughout. After illustrations of weaving, basketry and pottery we began creating our own designs in their styles. Rich, creamy colored craypas were used to color in the surfaces. Dark thick shades finalized the project and Native American designs and pictoials were created. Our October scraffito work is currently on it's way home. Holidays and family celebrations decorate our entry way here at school. Enjoy the holidays.

Sincerely,
