Graphic of a green leaf. All Visitors to Our School Sign In and Out:
All visitors are expected to report first to the school office upon before proceding to other areas of the school, and sign out before leaving the building. All students and visitors use the main entrance. For safety and security reasons, the doors at the end of each corridor will remain locked at all times. We continue to welcome volunteers who give so much of their valuable time and talents to benefit our school.

Reaching Teachers During the School Day:
Teachers may be reached one half hour before school begins in the morning as well as after school. Messages may be taken at any time. Unless there is an emergency, teachers may not be interrupted during instructional time.

Graphic of a green leaf. Attendance Policy:
Regular and punctual patterns of attendance are required of each student. While absences due to illness or other reasons are sometimes unavoidable, parents are encouraged to make every effort to minimize unnecessary student absences. Prompt arrival is also very important for your child. Coming to school late and leaving early can be very disorienting experiences for children.
Student attendance is basically the responsibility of the parents and students. To assist parents in fulfilling this responsibility, we will inform you of excessive absences if they occur. When a student has been absent for more than ten days, the Hancock Elementary School will notify the parent or guardian in writing.

Graphic of a green leaf. Calling to report a child absent or tardy:
Parents are expected to call and notify the school of a child’s absence, either the morning of the absence or prior to the day of the absence. If a child is absent for more than one day, parents are asked to confirm daily so we know the child is safely in your care when absent or tardy. The answering machine is on every night – leave a message any time. If tardy, remember to state what time your child will arrive, and whether he or she needs a school lunch.

Please walk tardy children inside: Parents are expected to enter the school with their child and report to the office to sign the child in. This helps us maintain accurate attendance records and ensures the safe arrival of all students.

Graphic of a green leaf. Notes Are Required to Notify the School of Schedule Changes:
Children need a note signed by a parent or guardian in order to leave school with anyone other than their parents. Long term notes for after school activities of a continuing nature are welcome. Without a note, children will be sent home in their usual way. Whenever possible, notes should be given to children before they leave home in the morning. Remind children to pass notes in promptly. Teachers collect dismissal notes and send them to the office first thing in the morning, and bus notes are handed to the bus drivers at the end of the day. For this reason, we suggest that parents use a separate piece of paper for any other notes to your child’s teacher.
What to include in the note:

Date and sign each note. Give your child's full name and include the address of the place your child is going. Indicate whether your child will take a bus or be picked up. For car pickups, include the name of the person who will pick the child up.
Children need notes whenever they will be:
1) Picked up instead of riding the bus (or the reverse for car pickup children)
2) Picked up by someone other than a parent or guardian
3) Dropped off at a different bus stop
4) Riding a different bus for a particular day

Graphic of a green leaf. Everyday Dismissal Procedures:
Buses: Grades 1 – 4 students: Dismissal is at 3:15 pm. Kindergarteners: Dismissal is at 12:30 pm. Students board school buses in the loading area of the parking lot.
Children picked up in cars: Parents in cars line up behind the buses. Cars may not hinder the buses' departure. After the buses exit, cars pull forward and children are dismissed individually.
Children who are picked up early: If you are taking your child to an appointment before dismissal, park and go to the school office to sign out your child. Your child will be paged from the office.
Walkers and bicycle riders depart down School Street. For safety reasons, no car pickups are permitted on School Street.

Graphic of a green leaf. Expectations for Appropriate Clothing:
Students are expected to wear appropriate seasonal clothing to school. Comfortable clothing that is suitable for school helps children concentrate on their studies. Safe and appropriate footwear must be worn at all times. Mud season usually requires boots. Sneakers are needed for physical education class. Outerwear for winter should include a coat, mittens, hat, boots and snow pants.
Clothing not allowed: No hats or headscarves are to be worn inside the school building. No halters, spaghetti straps, short shorts, mini skirts or half shirts/tops that reveal the midriff.

Behavior Expectations:
Students have a responsibility to behave in a manner appropriate to good citizenship everywhere: with courtesy, safety, responsibility and respect. Students will not be permitted to engage in any behavior that deprives other students of an orderly atmosphere for study. The ConVal District School Board is committed to providing a safe school environment, in which all members of the school community are treated with respect, as detailed in CVSB Policy JICBB, Pupil Safety and Violence Prevention Policy - Bullying, written in accordance with RSA 193-F. The right of each student to an education will receive the highest priority. Please see our Behavior Expectations Chart for details about what is expected of students at Hancock School.

Graphic of a green leaf. Homework:
Parents are encouraged to convey the message that the completion of homework assignments is important and a valuable part of each student’s education. Assigned homework will be in keeping with the level of the class and the age and ability of the students. Some homework assignments may be activities, while others will be practice necessary to reinforce classroom instruction. Parents are sometimes asked to sign homework assignments and are always welcome to call the school for clarification about homework.
Suggestions to help children establish good homework habits: Being available to answer questions, helping to gather materials needed to complete projects, quizzing to prepare for tests and spot-checking homework regularly are all excellent ways in which parents can help students succeed.

Graphic of a green leaf. Medications Administered in School:
No medications, prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines will be administered to students unless Contoocook Valley School District Medication Administration Forms are completed for each individual medication and are on file in the school office. All medicines must be in the original pharmacy container. Over-the-counter medicines must be in unopened packages. Parents are welcome to contact the school nurse with questions. Forms are available in the school office.

Graphic of a green leaf. Emergency Procedures:
The Hancock Elementary School has carefully planned Emergency Management Procedures. These procedures detail the evacuation routes and safety procedures to be used in the event of an emergency. Copies of the plan are posted in each classroom and safety drills are practiced regularly with students. See below for information about unannounced early dismissal procedures and snow day procedures.

How we handle early dismissals due to winter weather or other unexpected events,
and where to go for information on delayed openings and snow days:
What to know about early dismissals at HES:

TV + Radio Stations and Internet Links:
1. The Hancock School notifies each family by phone. This includes children who travel by school bus. Parents tell us how they wish children to go home. If we can't reach you, we call the other names you supplied on your child's Registration card and Health Information card.

5. For all parents and designated adults who come to school to pick up a child: One of our staff members will handle dismissal procedures. You will be asked to sign the child out, and he or she will be sent to meet you at the release desk.

Thank you for your cooperation and support. Your child's safety is very important to us!

2. Who's on your child's registration form? The names that you as parents or guardians supply on your child's Student Registration Form are the only other people we can call to assume responsibility for your child in an emergency (when we can't reach you - we always call parents first). Call us now to check that this information is correct and phone numbers are up to date! Make sure to notify these people about your plans!

3. No child will be dismissed without parental consent to an adult who is not listed on the registration form. If we can't reach you or the people you designate to care for your child, your child stays at school. We will keep calling; in the meantime, you can be reassured that your child is safe at school.

4. Please help us keep the phone lines open! A busy signal means we are calling another child's family, or we may be trying to reach you! When we call, we will need to keep the conversation as brief as possible. You can help by deciding ahead of time what your plan will be.

Remember:
A delayed opening means
there is no Kindergarten!
