Native American Art
In each region of North America, native people designed art objects based on resources and tools that were available. They were inspired by the landscape around them to create crafts that reflect their culture, spiritual stories and folklore.

Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997)
Lichtenstein is considered one of the founders of Pop Art. His comic book style influenced modern advertising and graphic design. He was a commercial artist and an art teacher.

John James Audubon (1785-1851)
Audubon was a French-American ornithologist who is best known for his colored illustration of birds. His book, Birds of America, illustrated, cataloged and described North American birds and is considered a rare collector’s item. A first edition recently was sold for over 8 million dollars.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944)
Wassily Kandinsky was born in Russia. He became an artist after careers in law and economics and is know as the founder of “Abstract Art”. His art is “non- objective”: in other words, it does not represent realistic objects but rather, personal expression and feeling. Music influenced his art tremendously.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Picasso was a prolific Spanish painter and sculptor who was one of the most influential modern artists. He painted in many different styles but is best known for co-founding “Cubism”.

Pierre-August Renoir (1841-1919)
Renoir was one of the first Impressionist painters and a close friend of Claude Monet. He started out as the apprentice to a porcelain painter. His work is characterized by quick brush strokes, filtered sunlight and scenes which show a joie de vivre. He glorified woman and children in many of his paintings.

Beth Krommes (1956- )
Beth Krommes lives in Peterborough and uses a scratchboard technique to illustrate her joyful children’s books. Beth was awarded the 2009 Randolph Caldecott Medal for her book, The House in the Night.

Vivaldi (1678-1741)
Antonio Vivaldi was an Italian composer and violinist. He composed over 400 concertos, the most famous of which is The Four Seasons which depicts spring, summer, autumn and winter in lively music. Besides concertos, he also composed church music and opera.
