(Famous Artists Come to School)

Every month from October through May, the students at Temple Elementary School learn about a new artist during art class. The children are taught about the artist's life and shown examples of the artwork created by the featured artist. Below are the artists who "visited" during the 2003-2004 school year.

Claude Monet, the French Impressionist was October's artist. Monet loved drawing the out of doors and did many renditions of his gardens in Giverny. Here are the student's interpretation of those paintings.

Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese woodblock print artist was studied in November. He is most most famous for his 36 Views of Mt. Fuji. Students created beautiful note cards using his work as a guide.

Keith Haring is one of the artists we studied in January. His drawings were childlike and fun. If you go to his website you will see what we mean. Unfortunately he died in 1990, but his art is still popular today.

We also studied Romare Bearden in January. He was a very famous African American painter and collagist. The picture to the left is called Conjur Woman (1964) from his "Projections" exhibit.

In February we learned about Vincent Van Gogh. Our project was to draw our own version of Starry Night which hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
