Science Experiments

We celebrate science during two months of the year. The first month we do experiments, the second month we have a Science Fair.

The children do a science experiment each week for homework. The goals for this assignment are many . . .

1. To learn about some science concepts and to have fun trying to figure out why some things react the way they do.

2. To read nonfiction technical reading. The directions for the experiments are written simply with pictures to follow. Children need this important skill.

3. To talk about and demonstrate what they learned by doing the experiment in front of their classmates and teaching about what they have learned. They need to bring in whatever they will need for their experiment and be ready on their designated day.

If children have science experiment books at home, they can use one of their own for the assignment as long as the book comes into school on the day of the demonstration. Students may also go online to find an experiment as long as they print the directions and bring them into class.

At the end of the first month, the students will have learned many different science concepts and their interest should have been sparked. They will have a week to choose a more in depth science concept to develop and will create a station that will be displayed and taught during a science fair. They will have two weeks to work on the project at home for homework, but they can start early if it has been cleared with me.
