THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

What is it?
An effective way to solve, problems as well as a process of obtaining, Organizing, and applying new knowledge.

Where did it come from?
The Italian physicist Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and the English philosopher Francis Bacon (1561-1626) are usually credited as the principal founders.

How does it work?
There are basically five steps:
1. State the problem (what is it you want to find out)
2. Predict the answer (make an educated guess)
3. Gather data and information (what will you observe, estimate, measure or find)
4. Perform experiments (record, organize, and analyze data)
5. Make a conclusion (formulate simplest rule that organizes prediction, information, and experimental results)

Anything else?
Yes, attitude. Success in science has more to do with attitude than with a particular method. This attitude is one of inquiry, experimentation, and humility before the facts.

My recognition of his work and thanks for having done it goes to Dr. Paul G. Hewitt, my inspiration as a science teacher. Hdl@CONVAL 7-00
